At last, 01 October arrives. Neil Hirtzel and I fished the Puniu and Mangatutu on opening day. The Puniu was clear, clean with a steady flow and holding fish. We nymphed our way upstream on Newman Road. Neil had a "yellow string" setup with two nymphs and I fished a 9m camo french leader with two nymphs. One a "lady gaga' and on the point a copper john. We both landed fish, Neil more than I. The fish, both rainbows and browns, were in good condition. They were not big fish but were very acrobatic. In the afternoon we went to the Mangatutu. We fished about two hundred metres upstream of the Lethbridge Road bridge. Some boot prints were evidence of other fishers. We did not see them. We had the same rigs as the Puniu and we both landed fish in the 2-3lb range. Once again a mixture of rainbows and browns. More fish were landed than on the Puniu and they were a bigger size overall. The river was in very good condition. The weather was warm and the wind stayed away until late afternoon. The landowner was pleased to let us fish his property. A great day out. Thanks to Neil for his advice.
