Headed south from Auckland at 0730 with Selwyn Hodder in his new Nissan Pathfinder. We crossed the Mangatutu at Lethbridge Road at 0930.The river was clear with a steady flow. The weather was overcast with no rain. We decided to go to Trout Heaven on Newman Road and check with the owner, Craig Caldwell, about access. We met two South Africans who were staying at Trout Heaven and they were getting ready to fish the Puniu River with Craig as their guide. Selwyn and I fished the Mangatutu upstream of the Lethbride Road bridge. As his preferred method Selwyn chose a floating line, long leader to a dry fly on a dropper and then two nymphs below that, truck and trailer style. His nymphs had gold bead heads. I chose a 9m camo french leader and two weighted nymphs, both black with tungsten beads. Selwyn had immediate success and landed a nice rainbow from a deep pool. We worked our way upstream and landed about 15 fish, some over two pound, in about 3 hours. We saw no other anglers. In the afternoon we fished above the Wharepuhunga Road bridge and Selwyn landed a nice rainbow, over two pounds. All the fish were in good condition and "feisty". A nice day out. Thanks to Selwyn and Craig.
