Had a great time fishing the Puniu on the weekend, ( 6th and 7th August). Accessed the river from Newman Road.
The river was clear with a flow of about 10 cumecs, Fished with a french leader of about 9 metres and worked my way upstream. Fished with the land owner Craig Caldwell.
I had a size 12 "lady gaga" on a jig hook on a dropper and a flashback pheasant tail about 50cm below that on the point.
Hooked 14 and landed 12 in about 3.5 hours. Craig did about the same numbers. A very good result. 30 plus fish for the morning.
The "lady gaga" took most fish. The jig hook swims upside down and doesn't snag the bottom and all fish get hooked in the top lip.
Sunday morning we fished from the "never fail pool" up stream to the "caravan". We landed about 10 and lost a couple in approx 1.5 hours.
The weather was cold, windy and wet. The fish don't care and neither did we.
A great venue and no other anglers around.
